It is hard not to find brand name perfumes everywhere you go. They are in retail stores, clothing stores and department stores. It seems as if every single celebrity has a line of perfumes and colognes out on the market just waiting for consumers to try and buy.

But you have to ask yourself if it is really worth the price. The perfume industry is by no means a small industry, but that does not mean that you should have to pay an arm and a leg for a bottle of your favorite scent.

One of the alternatives to buying brand name perfumes is to go with the cheaper "knock off" version of the perfume. It will have a similar name and a similar scent. Many times you can find these perfumes for less than ten dollars at a clothing outlet store, such as Cato or Fashion Bug, that specialize in lower priced women's clothing.

The tip here is that the scents last just as long, if not longer than the brand name version and in some cases smell identical or even better than the celebrity endorsed version! It is an incredible bargain that cannot be beat and many feature an accompanying body lotion to match, just as the brand name versions do.

A second alternative is to go with an essential oil combination that fits your taste and lifestyle. After all, a perfume or eau de parfum is made up of essential oils and fragrances that are combined with alcohol to create the unique scent.

You can make your own mix at many online stores or specialty shops. You can have your own line of fragrances that are specialized just for you.

Try out different scents to create something that is totally your own style and do not be afraid to try different combinations. Just remember that essential oils are highly concentrated, so a little bit will go a long way. Use the perfume sparingly in order not to overpower everyone else in the room or to irritate your own senses and skin.

Some people cannot go without brand name perfumes. That is fine, but there is still no need to pay those outrageous department store prices. There are some tips for buying perfumes and colognes at a discount.

One way is to buy them online at such places as "Perfumania". The second is to buy gift sets when the holidays roll around. Usually the fragrances are marked down substantially.

You may not get a huge bottle but you will get a bath gel and body lotion at a pretty reasonable price. Saving money and getting your favorite scent makes it smell all the more sweet.

Bricks Are More Interesting Than You Think

Bricks may seem dull and mundane, but they have a history and come in all shapes and sizes...read on.

The first known bricks have been dated to about 7,500 BC and were made from sun dried mud in the Upper Tigris area of south eastern Turkey. Archeological evidence shows the first fired bricks were probably produced in the third millennium BC in the middle east. Mud bricks don't stand up to tough weather conditions, so the development of fired bricks meant permanent buildings could be constructed in areas with high rainfall or cold or very hot weather. Bricks have the added advantage of being good insulators and storing heat during the day and releasing it slowly when the sun goes down.

By 1200 BC brick making was widespread - there is ample archeological evidence of their use across Europe and Asia and the Romans helped spread bricks across the Roman Empire.

Much later in the 18th and 19th centuries the development of transport networks and vehicles made the manufacture of building materials more centralised and industrialised. Up until then bricks, being heavy in bulk, tended to be made close to where they were used for construction. This industrialisation of the process made shape and size more standardised as well. This made construction quicker and simpler for bricklayers, rather than using stones of various shapes and sizes, requiring "jigsaw skills". Fast construction was vital during the industrial revolution, so the use of bricks became increasingly popular.

So what's in a brick? Bricks are most commonly made from clay. Raw clay is mixed with sand (to reduce shrinkage). The mixture is ground and mixed with water before being pressed into steel moulds, using a hydraulic press. The bricks are then fired to 1,000 centigrade, which locks in their strength. Modern brick-making involves rail kilns, where bricks are put through a kiln on a conveyor belt, slowly moving through to achieve continuous production.

Of course not all bricks are the same. For instance some a redder, others more yellow or pale. The colour is influenced by the mineral content of the clay used. So red bricks have a high iron content while pale bricks have a higher lime content. Also the hotter the temperature when firing the bricks, the darker they will be. Modern, concrete bricks tend to be grey.

So what do bricklayers like in a brick? First of all, bricklaying is a manual job so it's important that bricks can be picked up and handled easily in one hand, so that cement can be laid with a trowel with the other hand. This makes the job of bricklaying quicker. But there are other considerations, depending on the nature of the job. Brick colour, density, thermal qualities, fire resistance and size can all be relevant. Often large concrete blocks are used by bricklayers for internal, unseen work. As they are larger, not so many are required so with two bricklayers on the job a wall can go up quickly. Obviously with decorative or exposed brickwork the colour or even shape will be important to create the right effect.

Bricks began life as a step towards building stronger, more permanent buildings. But now bricklayers use them not only for buildings and walls but also for paving and pedestrian precincts - the modern equivalent of cobbles. Bricks are also used in industries requiring furnaces. The bricks used to build furnaces deal with regular, very high heats of 1,500 centigrade, for the production of glass and metals, so they need to be specially manufactured to be suitable for that sort of environment.

Bricks are everywhere but few people know their qualities, how they are made or where they originate from. They have been around for millennia, and so have the bricklayers who lay them. They are a strong, dependable building material that has changed very little for thousands of years and that will doubtless go on sheltering us for centuries to come.

Do You Know How Eau De Toilette And Perfume Differ ?

A flower by any other name is still just a flower. Yes, this is true but that does not always apply to fragrances. Perfumes and colognes are different when it comes down to the technical terminology. An eau de toilette is not the same as a perfume or an eau de parfum.

Many people make that mistake when buying and it later can give them a bit of trouble. You cannot expect or count on the sales clerk to know the differences either. It is not his or her job to make sure you are an informed customer. That is your job. With a little bit of reading you will know the facts.

There are three bottles standing on a department store counter arranged according to size. The tallest one is called an eau de toilette. It is often confused with being a perfume when in fact it is more like a body splash or similar in scent to a body lotion.

The second biggest is the eau de parfum. The third bottle is quite a bit smaller than the other two and is a perfume. Now, on to the subtle, or not so fragrantly subtle, differences.

The toilette water is a less concentrated fragrance that typically contains 1-6% concentration of perfume. It is meant to be a light and short lasting fragrance, typically like a body splash or spray mist that is found in after-shower products and also found in body lotion products. The second bottle, the eau de parfum, is the most common type of fragrance.

It is more expensive than the toilette water and contains typically 7-15% perfume concentrate. The third and much smaller bottle is the actual perfume itself. It is also known as extract or extrait perfume and is 15-40% concentrate. It is the most expensive version of the three and lasts the longest, and is typically used with an atomizer and/or used very lightly on pulse points to minimize the overwhelming impact they can have on the senses.

So there you go. You can now differentiate between the three types of "perfumes" that are on the market today. There is the eau de toilette, the eau de parfum and the actual, usually expensive, perfume. You should now be able to go to that fragrance counter and get exactly what you want without worrying about the differences between the three and why the smaller bottles cost so much more.
